“Marsden Hartley’s Maine,’ His Muse, First and Last

Marsden Hartley, the greatest of the early American modernists, was from small town Maine. But he was gay at a place and time when that was particularly difficult. Cosmopolitan Paris and Berlin were a much happier fit but then came the First World War and a return to the US – and Maine. The focus of this show, as the curator comments, is “if you are from one place, you leave it and you try to come back. What happens?”
