Leach’s advocacy of Japanese techniques shook up “dowdy” English ceramics and revitalized its studio pottery. However, his mantra of “truth to materials” was unsympathetic to modernist ceramic artists like Lucie Rie. And did it really capture the essence of Japanese ceramics practice?
