Without doubt Frankenthaler was a major contributor to 1960’s abstraction. Astonished at seeing Pollock’s work, she responded by soaking her canvasses with diluted paint to produce colourful, organic shapes. Others followed and colour field became the new thing. It remains Frankenthaler’s legacy, and a substantial one.
