How Lempad changed the course of art in Bali

Up to the 1920’s, Balinese painting was dominated by the stiff, flat styles on traditional puppets. Encouraged by a group of Europeans, one local artist began painting in a fuller looser style. Gusti Lempad’s work has given rise to a new and distinct strand of Balinese artwork, now celebrated in a major book.
