Hiroshi Hamaya: images of an inner war

Hiroshi Hamaya, a Japanese photographer, achieved global recognition in the 1950’s for his extraordinary images of rural Japan. Recently critics have wondered whether these images reflected the same beliefs about Japanese uniqueness that fed Japanese militarism. Whatever the merits of this view, Hamaya created a remarkable record of a Japan now gone. More images are here.
