Both a review of an Oscar-nominated documentary of the photographer Sebastiao Salgado and also a broader consideration of his acclaimed body of work. Amidst the acclaim,Slalgado has been criticized for focusing on human suffering. “Making suffering loom larger…may spur people to feel they ought to ‘care’ more. It also invites them to feel that the sufferings and misfortunes are too vast, too irrevocable, too epic to be much changed by any local political intervention”.
