Romanticism is commonly seen as a rupture with the Enlightenment, which had emphasised scientific reason. The artist’s subjective views were now a priority – think Constable or Turner landscapes. An exhibition at Yale University argues that the great Romantic painters did embrace critical thinking, using it to explore ““the emotional and imaginative capacities of the human subject”—which is to say, themselves.” An amazingly detailed and instructive interactive timeline has been made available
