Love, friendship and rivalry: The women beside the men in early surrealism

The best known Surrealist artists are mostly men. However, to accompany a current exhibition, the Tate has published an historical corrective. Several of these artists had wives / companions who were major artists in their own right but battled to get due recognition.. Said Dorothea Tanning (a long time partner of Max Ernst) “ Women artists. There is no such thing – or person. You may be a woman and you may be an artist; but the one is a given and the other is you.”
