To be shaped by the wood

A fire at the Royal Palace at Hampton Court in 1986 damaged exquisite wood panels made around 1690 by the great woodcarver, Grinling Gibbons. Restoration was put in the hands of an American, David Esterly, who is regarded as the greatest carver since Gibbons. Esterly has now written a memoir about the year-long project. Examples of his astonishing work can be seen here.
