A Different Guernica
John Richardson | New York Review of Books | 12th May 2016
Picasso’s Guernica has been called the “last great history-painting”. A new book has emerged about the notorious event that it depicts but Picasso’s biographer, in reviewing the book, bends the story back toward the painting. The Paris-based Picasso apparently said “I know I am going to have terrible problems with this painting”. Prophetic – over 40 years elapsed before it reached Spain, its intended destination.
